Today we are going to review the use of wordpress(wp). This article aims to introduce None Interaction collaborators to the administration of their wp blog. Therefore I assume that your blog is already running and we have provided you with an user name and a password. In future posts we’ll deal with more questions, but for now the most important thing is that you are able to start populating your blog with your ideas and contents.

The first thing you should do after we create the wp blog is to write some content in it. In order to do this you login into the wp administration panel, which normally is situated in the Meta menu in the lower-left side of the screen. After clicking in the login option and new page will be loaded asking us for the user name and password. Input your user name and password in the correspondent fields and you will be directed to the administration panel which looks something like this.

To start populating your blog the first things to do are writing some pages, editing the links and arranging the look of the site. To do this we use three tools in the menu of the administration panel: write, blogroll and presentation.

First you should write some stuff about yourself, to make a good “about me” page is an art in essence. An “About Me” page is one of the most important things in your blog. You should work in your “About Me” page first of all, and keep working in it until it’s ready. I sometimes go my page, I read it and make some changes. The basic things you should include in your “About Me” page are:

  1. Information about who you are
  2. Some lines about what you do and your skills
  3. Your goals and the problems you want to solve
  4. Details to contact you

An “About Me” page can allow the users to know you if it’s well written, but the most important thing for the users is not you, but what you can do for them. Make clear what are your skills and how you can apply them to help others.

I have included these links with more info about how to write better “About Me” pages, have a look and you’ll be ready to create the first page of you wp blog.

By now you should be thinking in what to put in this page, the best thing about wp is that the action of publishing your thoughts is very simple. To create your “About Me” you only have to click in the “Write” button in the main menu, then a submenu appears, click in the “Pages” button. Set the tittle in its field and write the text about you. You are a click away from your first page. When you think is ready click in the publish button and that’s it, the first page of your blog.

You could use the tools included in the text editor of the wp administration panel to create lists, paragraphs, align your text, and add links and images. You can also include HTML code using the “Code” option (Firefox). HTML is a very simple language to learn and in a few minutes you will be coding your site, using HTML tags to make it look better.

To upload files to your web space and include them in a blog entry use the upload menu beneath the text editor. Click on “Browse” to find the file you want to upload (files greater than 1MB would take longer so be patient) , set the title of your file and click in the “Upload” button situated at the bottom-left of the menu. After uploading the file you can just drag and drop the file where you want to locate in the text editor window. You can make the text window bigger or smaller by dragging the bottom-left corner mark in the same.

In the top right menu we find the section “Categories”, here you can create or assign categories to your posts. To create a category just set the name you want and click in the “Add” button.

In a the next chapter of this tutorial we’ll deal with how to add links to your blog. Here is a hint, in the wp blogs links are called “Blogroll”. I think you all can work this out by yourselves but I will explain it in depth in the next chapter.

Thanks
